This week we will have a quiz on the verb "ir". Students should know all forms of "ir" as follows:
Yo voy - I go/I am going Nosotros/Nosotras vamos - We go/we are going
Tú vas - You go/You are going (familiar)
Él va - He goes/He is going Ellos van - They go/They are going (masculine)
Ella va- She goes/She is going Ellas van - They go/They are going (feminine)
Usted va- You go/You are going (formal) Ustedes van - You all go/You all are going
The students should also be familiar with the Spanish phrase "ir a + infinitive" meaning "to go to + verb" and "ir a + location" meaning "to go to + location". In these phrases, the verb "ir" will be conjugated according to the subject of the sentence. However, in the "ir a + infinitive", the infinitive is NEVER to be conjugated. For example, "Ella va a comer".They will be expected to recognize the correct forms of the phrases from a grouping.
Example:
Choose the correct sentence meaning "She is going to prepare the food."
A)Ella va a prepara la comida
B)Ella va preparar la comida
C)Ella va prepara la comida
D)Ella va a preparar la comida
If you chose, "D", you were correct. D is correct, because "ir" is accurately conjugated to the "she" or "ella" form, the "a" meaning "to" is correctly included, and "preparar" is unconjugated as my previous explanation described it should be in the "ir a + infinitive" phrase.
Example:
Choose the sentence meaning "He is going to practice sports."
A) Él va a practicar deportes.
B) Él va a practica deportes.
C) Él va practica deportes.
D) Él va practicar deportes.
Here "A" is the correct answer for the same reasons. "Ir" becomes va in the "él" form, "a" meaning "to" follows "Él va", and the verb "practicar" is left unconjugated.
For further practice, try translating the following sentences. The correct answers will be listed at the bottom of this post. Only check your answers after completing all translations.
1) I am going to study.
2) You are going to eat.
3) We are going to talk on the phone.
4) They are going to go on a walk.
5) You all are going to do the homework.
The other types of questions on the quiz will simply require the students to choose the form of the verb "ir" that correctly completes the sentence.
Examples:
Juan y Pablo ______ a comer.
A) Va B) Vas C)Vá D) Van
The correct answer is "van", because "Juan y Pablo" is a plural third person subject. It takes the "they" form of "ir".
Try a few more examples. The answers are at the bottom. Again, don't check until after you have jotted your answers down.
